§ 16.02. Composition of school board.

  • The school board shall consist of eleven members, who shall be appointed by the council of the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. One member shall be appointed from among the residents of each of the seven boroughs whose terms shall be as follows: two members shall be appointed for one year; two for two years and three for three years. The four additional members shall be appointed from the city at large; two for a term starting July 1, 1966, and ending December 31, 1966; the other two starting July 1, 1966, and ending December 31, 1967. After this initial period, all appointments shall be for a period of three years; however, (i) the appointments of school board members representing the Kempsville and Pungo boroughs and two at-large seats whose terms expire December 31, 1994, shall not extend beyond June 30, 1994; (ii) the appointment of a school board member for the Bayside borough whose term expires December 31, 1995, shall not extend beyond June 30, 1994; (iii) the appointment of a school board member for the Lynnhaven borough whose term expires December 31, 1993, shall be extended to expire on June 30, 1994; (iv) the appointments of school board members representing the Blackwater borough and the two at-large seats whose terms begin January 1, 1994, shall not extend beyond June 30, 1996; and (v) the appointments of school board members representing the Princess Anne and Virginia Beach boroughs whose terms begin January 1, 1993, and expire December 31, 1995, shall be extended to expire on June 30, 1996. Any vacancy in an appointment shall be filled by the council for the unexpired term of the appointment.
